celebrate  Earth  Day

Wednesday  22  April  2015

an  international  event

Earth  Day  turns  45  this  year!

if  you can’t do something  on Wednesday,
do something next weekend

Have fun doing Earth Day activities with your kids

Fun Earth Day Activity Ideas ~

  • Check out  www.earthday.org.
  • Google search  Earth Day 2015 activities and the name of  your town/city/state  to find out what’s going on where you live.
  • There are fantastic suggestions for activities to do with your kids for Earth Day { and the weekend before or after }  from  About.Com Green Living   HERE   and   HERE.  there are too many great ideas for me to list.  About.Com Green Living is an excellent resource for things you can do all year round to live a greener lifestyle.  Truly,  every little bit helps!
  • Go Meatless for a day!  Combine Meatless Monday  Wednesday with Earth Day for a healthy and environmental one-two punch!
  • Plant a tree — visit the   Arbor Day Foundation  site for more info.  { ARBOR DAY IS  APRIL 24, 2015  but your state or country may celebrate on a different date   find out more HERE   with specific suggestions  for ways to celebrate  HERE  including instructions for how to plant a tree. }  or just plant a tree!  You can also donate just $1  per tree to be planted through the Earth Day Network’s  The Canopy Project (ON PAGE 11)  whose goal is to plant  10 million trees total around the world and  they need  7 million more in the next  5  years.  They are an official partner of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Billion Trees Campaign.  They are just one of  the projects funded by the Earth Day Network  (be sure to designate that you want your donation to go to The Canopy Project.)   I  just donated  $5  for  5  trees ~  will  you do the same?
  • If you have kids,  print out a calendar and draw a green star for each day that you do an activity that helps the earth!
  • Get your green thumb dirty and start a garden.  Learn more at sites like  Garden Web.   Even one pot with herbs inside by a window, or a container garden on your balcony.
  • While you’re at it,  start a compost pile too!   See  HowToCompost.Org  to start,  plus    things you can compost   and  The Huffington Post  “Cheat Sheet”  guide for how to start composting .
  • Turn trash into treasure!  Refurbish an old sofa,  chair or even a garment.  Get crafty and creative,  and you just might produce a work of art.  Get some ideas here at RealSimple.com ~  101 New Uses for Everyday Things.   Pinterest  is a great resource for Do-It-Yourself  ideas.
  • Park your car.  Spend the day walking or biking to the places you need to go.  If you’re heading somewhere that’s a bit far,  try public transportation!
  • Green Spring Clean.  { Okay,  so this isn’t so much of  a  FUN  activity,  but Earth Day is good motivation for changing  to  “GREEN”  cleaning. }  Swap your bulbs for energy efficient LED’s*,  clean your house with eco alternative products,  upcycle and or donate unwanted clothing and household items,  etc.  Use great environmentally safe and super effective cleaners of all types from lemons to vinegar to baking soda to hydrogen peroxide at  Real Simple  HERE  or just do a google search.  { *I used to use CFL bulbs until two lamps were damaged when the bulbs burnt out,  damaged the sockets and started smoking.  The price of  LED bulbs has come down drastically and last even longer than CFL bulbs with a greater energy savings as well.  There is a wide selection of  styles and you can choose whether you want  “soft white” or  “daylight”  lighting. }
  • Cook up a local,  organic meal  and serve up some organic cocktails!  Toast Mother Earth and yourself,  too.
  • Go on a picnic
  • Explore Nature  ~ See  The Nature Conservancy.
  • Free Online Earth Day games  HERE.
  • Starbucks begins giving away used coffee grounds to gardeners around this time of year,  so be on the lookout for that sustainable perk.
  • Need help finding a recycling center for appliances to automobiles;  batteries to electronics;  oil to tires and everything inbetween?     Click HERE to find the right recycling centers near you.

You can donate to the  EARTH DAY NETWORK HERE  either a general donation,  or designate which project  (IE:  The Canopy Project)  that you would like your donation to go to.  (Donations can be made with a credit/debit card, by check or through PayPal.)  If  more is not done,  AND SOON,  to help stop global climate change,  our children and grandchildren  WILL  live in a far different world with more problems than we can imagine.  Did you know there is already at least one town in Alaska which has to be moved because of  the encroachment of  the ocean directly due to global climate change?  Whether or not you believe in “Global Warming” caused by human beings,  there is no disputing the global climate changes already happening and that there ARE actions that we can take to help.  Even small things add up to big changes if  enough of  us participate!

Want to get serious about helping?  Get the  Leadership Toolkit  HERE  with tips,  ideas,  suggestions  and  more from  earthday.org.

Urge your government leaders to sign the Paris Climate Treaty by  starting a letter-writing campaign or online petition.

Sign the climate petition to save the planet  HERE.  It only takes a minute and costs nothing.

Join Earth Day Network in their effort to plant more trees. Organize a team to plant trees in your neighborhood or donate to The Canopy Project.   Scroll down to Page 11 HERE  for more information on  The Canopy Project.   It only takes  ONE DOLLAR  to plant a tree ~ EVERYONE  can afford to donate $1,  or better yet talk to your employer about becoming a sponsor  (or do both!)  The goal of  The Canopy Project   is to plant  10 million trees total around the world and  they need  7 million more in the next  5  years.  They are an official partner of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Billion Trees Campaign.  They are just one of  the projects funded by the Earth Day Network.  I  just  donated  $5  for  5  trees ~  will  you do the same?

Create an eco-fair with local green businesses and environmental organizations. Not only will this inform the public of ways they can get involved, but it’s also a fun way to promote local businesses and bring your community together.

Lead a recycling drive to collect as much plastic, metal, and glass as possible.

Organize a project at a local school,  such as planting a native species garden.

Pick up trash at a local park or beach.
