“If  you kept a part of  everything you’ve broken,  how big would the pile be?  Several trunks would  follow moves,  and,  if  you dared to reach into shards of  glass and crockery,  you might  find  forgotten hours and days in  fragments….  Loss eludes the  future tense.  You write about what’s gone because you wish  for belief,   faith in what you once possessed and don’t anymore.”

urged by an unseen hand to turn around
i  find you in the crowd
and look straight into your eyes

do you see your past in mine?
all the losses you wish you could pluck from me one by one,
to reacquaint yourself  with what might have been?

or perhaps wanting to ask if  i  have saved your forgotten fragments?
forcing your longings upon my irises
pretending that they are mine,  too

i  don’t have to wonder what the future holds
for all that you might deny it
the love and joy of  a life well-lived resides within you

drowning out the cries of  passing sorrows,
unfulfilled desires and deserted dreams
you/i  will mend the breaks and flourish  ’til the end

“Old Man”   Neil Young

the post  “Speaking of  You as Me (or the opposite)”  by  David Marshall on his website  ‘Signals to Attend‘  was the inspiration for my poem.  i  hope it doesn’t disappoint  Mr. Marshall.   please follow the links to his blog and read the post in its entirety.   i  also felt the song  “Old Man”  by  Neil Young  was quite fitting.

“Old Man”   Neil Young

lyrics ~

Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there’s so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don’t get lost.
Like a coin that won’t get tossed
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I’m a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that’s true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn’t mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I’ve been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I’m all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I’m a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that’s true.

Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.
