she couldn’t look at him…
wouldn’t let him see her cry

“it’s not you…
i just can’t stay any longer”

he started to reach out to touch her…
knew it wouldn’t help

“when somebody loves you
their promises are supposed to
mean something”

“i’m sorry”

and with that,
she turned
and walked out the door

“Too Close”   Alex Clare

{sounds to me like a selfish self-centered bastard)

lyrics ~

You know I’m not one to break promises
I don’t want to hurt you but I need to breathe
At the end of it all, you’re still my best friend
But there’s something inside that I need to release
Which way is right, which way is wrong
How do I say that I need to move on
You know we’re headed separate ways

And it feels like I am just too close to love you
There’s nothing I can really say
I can’t lie no more, I can’t hide no more
Got to be true to myself
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
So I’ll be on my way

You gave me more that I can return
Yet there’s so much that you deserve
Nothing to say, nothing to do,
I’ve nothing to give
I must leave without you
You know we’re headed separate ways

And it feels like I am just too close to love you
There’s nothing I can really say
I can’t lie no more, I can’t hide no more
Got to be true to myself
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
So I’ll be on my way

So I’ll be on my way

And it feels like I am just too close to love you
There’s nothing that I can really say
I can’t lie no more, I can’t hide no more
Got to be true to myself
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
So I’ll be on my way

So I’ll be on my way
So I’ll be on my way

  1. It’s perfect, Sista Poet! It’s really true to my movie theme. I feel like there is a whole backstory here and wonder what it is that has made her have to say goodbye. I say “have to” cos it feels to me like something she doesn’t really want to do, but feels she must.

I’m so glad you did my FBF challenge, sis, and that you are first! Wowee!

  2. they are supposed to but….well it just does not quite work out that way always

  3. And that’s what love does, doesn’t it… leave us wide open to be hurt but, if it’s real, (to me) it has to be so worth it. Lovely write Dani

Totally agree that is a song about a total selfish bastard or bitch if it was a female writing it. I think the line about “You gave me more than I can return” says it was a one sided relationship and the selfish person must have sucked the giving person until they could give no more. So if I was the person who the selfish person was leaving then I think I would be down on my knees praising the Lord that I would no longer have to try and make that person love who could only love themselves. Life is too short to waste it on a selfish a-hole who has no sense to appreciate what they are given.

This is a really nice one for the Promises Theme Thursday post. Thanks so much.

    God bless.

This may be short, but it’s a whole movie in and of itself, a scene that’s probably essential to any chick flick and to many, many love stories as well.Sometimes a girl’s gotta do what she’s gotta do.

  6. Sometimes that’s what needs to be done.

  7. A lovely sad love story. Like your form of writing. Awesome 55!
    Mine is here
Have you a ROCKING AND BLESSED WEEKEND!!!
    hugs
    shakira

  8. You have written a classic love story here. So well done!

  9. I really felt that one! Ouch!

  10. Oh, yes, the flipside of love that also can leave one breathless. Captured well, Dani!

  11. a very subtle take on this prompt….enjoyed…

  12. “when somebody loves you
    their promises are supposed to
    mean something”

That’s a true story right there.

  13. Helen

Love the image of woman as ‘knowing what she has to do.’ I have been that woman, nicely done, Dani.

  14. At first I thought it was he that cheated… but with the “it’s not you…” makes me think it was she that cheated! That puts a bit of a twist on the classic “he done me wrong” scenario. :)

  15. I love the visual presentation. It’s sort of like a Pac-Man mouth or a less-than mathematical symbol, either suggesting additional meaning.

  16. I can hear the footsteps walking away…..great writing! :-)

  17. Too bad ~ Wishing you happy weekend Dani ~

  18. wow, if Alex Clare sounds to you like a selfish, self-centred bastard … I wonder what you’d think of me.

I love the colours of your website though :)

    • thank you for your comment on the site colors. i have a policy not to judge other women {unless you’re my mother} with hopes that they won’t judge me either. i don’t mind criticizing men, though. {smile} thanks for stopping by, Jessica. ♥

  19. Oh I’ve been there, and I was always the one being left, wondering what all those pretty promises had meant……you nailed it, kiddo. Very real. It’s why I chose to stay single around the beginning of the new millenium:)

i'd love to hear from you ♥ thanks! {comments must be approved before they are visible}
