Dance, when you’re broken open.
Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off.
Dance in the middle of the fighting.
Dance in your blood.
Dance, when you’re perfectly free. ~~ Rumi

i’ve  danced in the blood of  my foes
i’ve  danced in the blood of  my loves

i’ve  ripped out the hearts of  my enemies
i’ve  broken the hearts of  my lovers

 i’ve  been a vindictive bitch,  and yet…
i’ve  shared in the joy of  my friends’  victories

i’ve  hated
i’ve  loved
i’ve  lashed out
i’ve  held close
i’ve  triumphed
i’ve  failed

wrong  or  right
cruel  or  kind
in the end
it never mattered

whether you hate me
or you love me
one thing
remains the same  ~

whatever  i’ve done to you
whatever choices i’ve made
i’ve always been true to myself
and  i’ve always been my true self  to you

dance in my blood if  you need to
dance in my blood if  you so desire

dance ’til the moon goes down
and all the stars
vanish from the sky

celebrate my life
or celebrate my death
just please…
don’t let me be forgotten

“True To Myself”  Ziggy Marley

this poem had its start in a most unusual way…  i  visited  ‘First Pages’  the blog of  my friend,  Becky Sain.  she is my favorite writer,  whether poetry or prose,  fiction or biographical essays.  the word that always comes to mind when i think of  her writing is  evocative.  { read the  ‘featured poet’  posts i did about her  HERE  and  HERE. }   she started a post with the Rumi quote above ~  her  poem  “dancing in my blood”  is  HERE.   i have blatantly ripped off  her title { i sent her an email telling her what i’d done } but  i don’t think  i plagiarized her poem.  please click on the link to read her poem ~ it’s so much better than mine.  { by the way,  my poem is not autobiographical! }

  1. Dani….. A poem written with strength and passion! The arrangement of the words contributed to its dynamic quality. I liked the ending — everyone wants their life remembered, hopefully for good….but if not, at least for something.

    • from the sounds of it, i’d say this woman’s life won’t be remembered much for the good… {smile} thank you for your visit and kind comment, Mary! ♥ i’m always happy to see you.

  2. so very, very human. beautiful.

  3. Definitely a poem about a strong woman…wouldn’t mind having a bit of her toughness every once in a while.! Very nicely written, Dani!

  4. A well written ode to being true to oneself. I love your strong closing lines!

  5. who can fault you when you are true to your self…and that leaves it open for others to love or leave you and you the freedom to not feel like you have to live up to what they think you should be…and in the end…i def hope not to be forgotten…

  6. Yes celebrate! This really flows well, Dani

  7. I like the dance to celebrate life ~ And rumi is a good inspiration too ~

Great to see you Dani ~

  8. Being true to oneself is not always as easy as it may seem…

  9. There is a strength in this that makes it larger than life. Love the quote and love the poem. Great job.

i'd love to hear from you ♥ thanks! {comments must be approved before they are visible}
