 the monster in the dark

•ӝ•

always there ~

felt rather than seen
manifested in fear…
gripping one’s heart
so tight
it’s impossible to breathe

•ӝ•

always there ~

in the knowledge
that happiness
won’t last…
can’t last…
it’s not deserved

•ӝ•

always there ~

in the back of  the mind
constantly
eating away…
eroding confidence…
until it’s merely bravado

•ӝ•

always there ~

ready…
waiting…
hungry
to take control…
to sabotage

•ӝ•

always there ~

insecure…
defensive…
arrogant…
hurting anyone
who gets too close

•ӝ•

always there ~

the monster
in the dark…
the monster
who is
me

That picture is awesome and quite frightening. If only all our monsters were ourselves, masquerading as the evil we fear. Your poem has an eerie quality that can terrify the reader.
It scared me a little. LOL!

  4. get outta my head, woman!

  5. I really liked the insecurity of the narrator in this poem of yours Dani, hiding and running scared! Brilliant!

  6. Fear is a darkroom where negatives develop. —Anonymous
A very honest, introspective piece in lines with few words.
    “gripping one’s heart
    so tight
    it’s impossible to breathe”
    Excellent cadence and fitting content.

  7. nice…often we can be our own greatest monsters…for sure…

    • that’s often the case, especially if there were monsters outside some time in the past. thank you for visiting and commenting, Brian.♥

  8. super cool post Dani !! you nailed this :)

  9. Powerful piece, recognizing the depth to which one succombs for its beliefs.

  10. Intensely self-aware, vivid, with a great exit-line.
