“fear not for the future
weep not for the past”
the only advice my mother ever gave me…..
if she had known what i would do in the future
she would surely have wept

as young as four
i radiated a charisma
heralded as divine
i followed my intuition
never seeking permission

i prayed with wolves
to grant faith and understanding to humanity
i consulted with ravens
about omens and mysteries
i felt no need to conceal my actions

my father dismissed my beliefs as fantasy
my mother pretended nothing was amiss
some were certain it was deception or at least delusion
there were those who whispered it was daemonic
others worshipped me as though i were a god

indifferent to them all
i immersed myself in the arcana of the universe
until i understood my purpose
then i bade the ravens fly around the world
to gather every shadow, high and low

having no choice but to accede to my destiny
i swallowed the shadows brought to me
including those belonging to the ravens
until the darkness disappeared
and me with it
leaving the earth in light forevermore

there is a place
i used to go
to reflect
upon my shortcomings
in hopes of learning how to be
a better me

in the winter
my soul shivered
shaking my thoughts loose
until they became meaningless as snowflakes

in the spring
wildflowers began to grow
between my thoughts
tickling all sense away

in the summer
the heat left nothing
but vapor trails of thoughts
behind my dazzled eyes

in the autumn
the trees pelted me with acorns
pummeling my thoughts
into a jumbled mass of confusion

i went again
and again
but never did i find
what i was seeking

so instead, this year
i am going to lean
into your embrace
and see myself
through the reflection
in your eyes

in complete silence
close your eyes
and imagine

if we had proof of Heaven

if we could go to Heaven and back

if we knew without a doubt
that our actions here on Earth
determine if we get into Heaven after death

how the world might change

would all violent crime disappear?

women are my windmills
i tilt at them

women, women everywhere
as far as my eyes can see

young women
women of a ‘certain age’
innocent women
women hiding a wicked nature

tall women
women who long to be called petite
brunette women
women claiming to be natural blondes

beautiful women
women molded into a plastic image
intelligent women
women who play dumb

as far as my eyes can see
women, women everywhere

women are my windmills

“Don Quixote” Gordon Lightfoot

Tilting at windmills is an English idiom which means attacking imaginary enemies ~ the phrase derives from an episode in the novel ‘Don Quixote’ by Miguel de Cervantes. in the novel, Don Quixote fights windmills that he imagines to be giants. Quixote sees the windmill blades as the giant’s arms, for instance. tilting at windmills also means the sort of hopeless, romantic, crazily pointless but somehow endearing taking-on of something that either doesn’t exist or can’t be attained

In the 2010 TV Series “The Trip,” Steve Coogan says “Women are my windmills. I tilt at them.”
