2012  featured  poets

at my heart’s love songs

dVerse ~ Poets Pub
Brian Miller & Claudia Schoenfeld

to celebrate {inter}national poetry month,  i am pleased to be featuring some of  the most creative,  talented,  brilliant  {really!}  poets of  our time.  i have been fortunate over the past two and a half years to meet this amazing group of  people through twitter and their blogs.  not only are they writers who excite and enchant and entrance their readers,  they are,  one and all,  nice people who are supportive of  everyone in our online poetry community.  the “age of  technology”  has,  in fact,  facilitated the spread of  the ARTS! ~  poetry,  photography,  art,  prose,  music…   i have friends i have yet to meet face-to-face from all around the world.  day or night,  you can visit their blogs and be transported to another time or place or frame of  mind with just a few clicks of  a mouse.  i find it thrilling!  and i believe you will find it equally thrilling to discover their words.

just click on the  “Read More”  links on each poem to be taken to a new tab or window to read the rest of  the poem on the author’s blog.  if  you enjoy what you read,  please leave a comment on their blog to let them know.  { you don’t have to say you saw them here. }  i am truly honored that these wonderful people agreed to be featured on my blog ~  my gratitude to them all.

and thank you for coming to our celebration ~  enjoy!

dVerse ~ Poets Pub

“around the world or around the block
dVerse is the people, the verse to share,  sit,  speak.
we are poetry in motion,  so grab a front row seat”

dVerse ~ Poets Pub  officially opened on 19 July 2011,  though the first  “link-up”  was  16 July 2011.  it’s hard for me to believe that the site has only been open nine months.  with over 134,000 visits,  it feels like home to many poets.  the site was started by co-founders,  Brian Miller  and  Claudia Schoenfeld,  as an environment to nurture the online poetry community.   here’s what they say about the site:

“D’verse Poets Pub is a place for poets and writers to gather to celebrate poetry.  We are many voices,  but one song.  Our goal is to celebrate;  poets,  verse  &  the difference it can make in the world.  To discover poetry’s many facets and revel in it’s beauty,  even when ugly at times.”

they  have three opportunities each week for poets to take the stage and mingle with their fellow poets:

  • Poetics - is all about inspiration.  You will write about a provided prompt,  whether music,  art,  photography,  quotes or other challenges.  Poetics opens at 3 pm EST on Saturday.
  • OpenLinkNight – is our large gathering where you link any poem you would like.  This is a great place to meet and hear new voices.  OLN opens at 3 pm EST on Tuesdays.
  • FormForAll/Meeting the Bar: Critique and Craft – is our lab,  where you will receive teaching on poetry forms and critique.  This is where we hone our skills.  FormForAll and Meeting the Bar:  Critique and Craft will alternate weeks and opens at 3pm EST on Thursday.

both Brian and Claudia are brilliant poets.  enjoy this small sampling of  their words ~

featured poet:

Claudia Schoenfeld

Claudia Schoenfeld  lives in Germany,  works in Switzerland and lives close enough to France to have a front row seat,  watching their  “quatorze juillet” fireworks.  so she’s used to cross borders and finds it easy to see beauty in other cultures.  Claudia loves thunderstorms,  improvising on her Alto Sax,  biking and in warm summer nights you sometimes find her sitting on the pavement with a glass of red wine and the mad desire to fly with the passing clouds…   she’s married,  mom of three teenage kids and yep…  published.  Claudia discovered writing poetry in 2010 and since then she has been on a Poetry adventure trail she hopes will never stop unfolding.  ten of Claudia’s poems were recently published in  Fragments.’   her blog is  jaywalking the moon.  Twitter:  @cmschoenfeld

i was introduced to Claudia and her poetry through One Stop Poetry.  no matter the subject or the form,  Claudia’s writing is  filled with passion and vivid imagery.   i don’t know how many languages she speaks,  but she never gives a hint in her poetry that her native language isn’t English.  oh, and for a real treat,  listen to one {or several} of  her audio recordings of  her poetry.  if  i was a man,  i’d be her slave.  she has been incredibly encouraging of  my writing for which i am very grateful.  in her own words ~

“i’m blazing words & drinking poetry.  join in & we may get a prose fire burning,  set the town on fire & syllable-dance in a snowflake covered yard.  i try to think big and love recklessly…”

“This Night”   Black Lab

lyrics ~

There are things I have done
There’s a place I have gone
There’s a beast and I let it run
Now it’s running my way
There are things I regret
That you can’t forgive
You can’t forget
There’s a gift
That you sent
You sent it my way

So take this night
And wrap it around me like a sheet
I know I’m not forgiven
But I need a place to sleep
So take this night
And lay me down on the street
I know I’m not forgiven
But I hope that I’ll be given some peace.

There’s a game
That I played
There are rules
I had to break
There’s mistakes that I made
But I made them my way

So take this night
And wrap it around me like a sheet
I know I’m not forgiven
But I need a place to sleep
So take this night
And lay me down on the street
I know I’m not forgiven
But I hope that I’ll be given some peace
Some peace
Some peace

this is a blatant rip-off  of  my friend Fireblossom’s poem  “THE DEMANDING DOLL”  which i recommend you go and read first  HERE  {i’ll wait}  at her blog ‘Shay’s Word Garden.’   she does not know  {yet}  that i wrote this poem and i do not have her permission to use her character  ‘the Colonel’  ~  i’m hoping she likes my poem  {or at least likes me}  enough not to sue me for copyright infringement.  i don’t have anything of  value,  so it wouldn’t do her much good to sue me anyway.   i know,  it takes a lot of  balls for me to do a take-off  of  her brilliant writing,  but muse can be very insistent!  he thinks very highly of  HIS  abilities and is always complaining about getting stuck with such a half-assed excuse for a writer  {meaning me}  ~  oh,  well!    please forgive me,  Shay!  oh,  and all of  the information below the music video about where you can purchase the doll is for real.

{blush} i just realized i misread  “colonial”  {as in a style of  house}  in Fireblossom’s  poem as “colonel”  {as in a style of  boyfriend}  ~  sorry,  Shay!

Regina,  the ball jointed doll,
was walking down the street
minding her own business and
singing  ‘doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy do’
when the Colonel pulled his gawd-awful
pink jeep up onto the sidewalk,
blocking her way.

“What the fuck do you want,  Loser?”
Regina asked.
“You’ve got to help me”  he pleaded
“talk some sense into that twin sister of  yours.”

“Oh,  right,  like she ever listens to me…
besides,  I don’t even like you!
So why would i help you?”

The Colonel looked like he was about to burst into tears.
“But I love her…  I really do!
She says the baby’s not mine,
but I don’t believe her!
Please!  Help me!”

Just then Regina’s boyfriend,  Exitium,
came around the corner.
He didn’t like the Colonel either,
so he ran over and punched him
in the face twice,  just for the helluva it.

Putting his ball-jointed arm around Regina,
he asked  “Wassup,  babe?”
She gave him a great big kiss

before saying
“Nothin’  important,  sweetie.”

And with that they turned around
and walked down the street,
hand-in-hand,
singing  ‘doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy do.’

“Do Wah Diddy”  Manfred Mann

lyrics ~

There she was just a-walkin’ down the street, singin’ “Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do”
Snappin’ her fingers and shufflin’ her feet, singin’ “Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do”
She looked good (looked good), she looked fine (looked fine)
She looked good, she looked fine and I nearly lost my mind

Before I knew it she was walkin’ next to me, singin’ “Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do”
Holdin’ my hand just as natural as can be, singin’ “Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do”
We walked on (walked on) to my door (my door)
We walked on to my door, then we kissed a little more

Whoa-oh, I knew we was falling in love
Yes I did, and so I told her all the things I’d been dreamin’ of

Now we’re together nearly every single day, singin’ “Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do”
A-we’re so happy and that’s how we’re gonna stay, singin’ “Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do”
Well I’m hers (I’m hers), she’s mine (she’s mine)
I’m hers, she’s mine, wedding bells are gonna chime

Whoa-oh, I knew we was falling in love
Yes I did, and so I told her all the things I’d been dreamin’ of

Now we’re together nearly every single day, singin’ “Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do”
A-we’re so happy and that’s how we’re gonna stay, singin’ “Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do”
Well I’m hers (I’m hers), she’s mine (she’s mine)
I’m hers, she’s mine, wedding bells are gonna chime

Whoa-oh-oh-oh, oh yeah
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do, we’ll sing it
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do, oh yeah, oh, oh yeah
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do
