911, What is your emergency, please?
⠐
IT’S….. IT’S THE FISHES…..
⠐
The fishes, sir? What about the fish?
⠐
THEY’RE SWARMING ABOVE WHATEVER IT IS….. IN A FRENZY….. WATER SPLASHING ALL AROUND THEM!
⠐
Where are you, sir? What is the nature of your emergency?
⠐
{ SOBBING GASP } DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND? THEY’RE SWIMMING EN MASSE AS IF THEY WERE ONE SINGLE HYSTERICAL FISH! SURROUNDING IT COMPLETELY! YOU HAVE TO COME AND PULL IT OUT!
⠐
Pull what out, sir?
⠐
THE BODY….. THE BODY!!!! SOMEONE HAS TO GET IT OUT!!! PLEASE!!! { SEEMING TO SOB UNCONTROLLABLY }
⠐
Are you saying there’s a dead body in the water? Did you hurt someone, sir?
⠐
YES….. NO….. NO!! YES, THERE IS A BODY IN THE WATER ~ THE FISH ARE TEEMING ABOUT IT….. ALMOST LIKE THEY’RE TRYING TO PROTECT HER. I DIDN’T HURT ANYONE….. I WAS JUST WALKING BY….. I’M CALLING TO REPORT IT. PLEASE HURRY!
⠐
We have someone on the way now, sir. What is your exact location, please?
⠐
I….. I DON’T KNOW….. UM….. SOMEWHERE ON THE YOUNG RIVER….. DOWN BY THE OLD WEEPING WILLOW. { BEGINNING TO RAISE HIS VOICE IN FRUSTRATION } CAN’T YOU LOCATE ME FROM THE GPS ON MY CELLPHONE?
⠐
Can you see her, sir? What does she look like? You said “her.”
⠐
I’M JUST GUESSING IT’S A WOMAN. THERE’S LONG HAIR FLOATING ON THE WATER. THE FISH ARE COVERING UP EVERYTHING ELSE, AND THE WATER IS FOAMING FROM ALL OF THEIR MOVEMENT. I’M SURE THEY ARE PROTECTING HER….. BUT I CAN’T SEE WHAT FROM. I WON’T GO ANY CLOSER. I DON’T WANT TO CONTAMINATE THE CRIME SCENE.
⠐
Why do you call it a crime scene, sir? Do you see any signs of a struggle? Or a possible murder weapon?
⠐
IT’S TOO DARK TO SEE IF THERE WAS A STRUGGLE. I CAN’T SEE ANYTHING, I JUST KNOW FROM TELEVISION SHOWS THAT I SHOULDN’T ENTER THE CRIME SCENE. WHERE ARE YOU PEOPLE, FOR GOD’S SAKE?
{ SILENCE }
…..DO YOU HEAR THAT? IT’S LIKE THE FISH ARE CALLING ME TO COME HELP THEM ….. … ..
⠐
Sir! You just said yourself that you shouldn’t contaminate the crime scene. Stay back, sir.
Sir? Sir? Are you still there?

“Down by the River” Neil Young with Crazy Horse
lyrics ~
Be on my side,
I’ll be on your side,
baby
There is no reason
for you to hide
It’s so hard for me
staying here all alone
When you could be
taking me for a ride.
Yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river,
Dead, oh, shot her dead.
You take my hand,
I’ll take your hand
Together we may get away
This much madness
is too much sorrow
It’s impossible
to make it today.
Yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river,
Dead, oh, shot her dead.
Be on my side,
I’ll be on your side,
baby
There is no reason
for you to hide
It’s so hard for me
staying here all alone
When you could be
taking me for a ride.
Yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river,
Dead, oh, shot her dead.

I love Neil, but I never liked that song. Too creepy.
that’s why i thought it fit with the ‘poem’ {not sure what to label it ~ maybe just ’911 calls’} ♥ thanks for stopping by, Sis!
What an eerie tale you tell! WOW!
http://www.kimnelsonwrites.com/2013/01/06/and-the-angels-flew/
every once in a while, something twisted this way comes… {smile} thanks for stopping by, Kim! ♥
You do suspense well, dani!! I enjoyed this and now I want to know the rest of the story…forthcoming?
Great write, dani and by the way…I apologize for my tardy response on the awesome feature!! I really appreciate it, dani, thank you so much!! Hearts.
thank you, Hannah! ♥ i think that’s the end of this story for me… {absolutely no apology necessary!!}
Lol!! That’s okay…wishful thinking and thank you for being so understanding. Smiles and hugs!
and *Giant Sparkly Squishy Hugs* to you! ♥
What an amazing response to the image. I love it. The music works perfectly with it!
i actually had this set at the ocean until i remembered the Neil Young song, so changed it to a river. thank you so much for your kind, kind comment, Susie! ♥
Totally weird and creepy Dani!! Good job!
thanks, Peggy! ♥ sometimes i am totally weird, though rarely creepy. {smile}
Wow! Wow!
This is simply amazing, Dani. What an original and unusual approach to story-telling. I love the drama of the conversation, and the mystery of the woman sleeping with the fishes.
you are too kind, Kerry! ♥ at first glance, Escher’s image appeared to me to be a jumble of fish. then i looked more closely and saw that each fish is there in its entirety, but i still had that feeling of a frenzy of fish… so, this is where my twisted mind ended up. {smile} thanks for the fabulous prompt!
oh dang…i really like this write dani….like a short story…its got nice intensity to it….its a bit surreal with the singing fish asking them to come help…but its got that panic feel as well….very cool
my twisted side comes out every now and again… or should i say, one or another of my twisted sides come out now and then {smile}
Frantic story! A goody.
thank you very much, ReBelle! ♥ i appreciate your visit and kind comment!
Wow Dani! Your poem really set the scene for me! I love
thank you for your visit and comments, Winnie! ♥ you’re so sweet!
Ooops..I am a spaz. I wanted to finish my thought. You could really write a suspense novel as you captured the feeling of the piece, and the suspence so well. Freaky scary!
I smiled when I read about your crackers! How fun! Love to hear when others get into a crafty groove!
i love to cook, bake, sew, crafts of all kinds, draw, paint, write…. writing is about the only thing i’ve been doing the last couple of years. need to get back to some of the other things, too, so thank you for your inspiration, Winnie! ♥
Yippee… a real screenplay!!
ooooh! i like that! thank you very much, Helen! ♥ you are so sweet!
Wow! You got me! and I am not leaving!
thank you, Susan! ♥ i really appreciate your visit and kind comment!
ha – so very cool dani.. wonderful storytelling…i felt like i was right in the middle of it
i hope you weren’t in the middle of the fish! {smile} you’re too kind! thank you, claudia! ♥
Escher’s oeuvre invites interpretation by each viewer, doesn’t it? And going with your reaction to the work doesn’t necessarily mean a twisted mind. It is, if you ask me, a twist of fish.
Loved the 911 conversation as a poem.
K
i love that, Kay! “a twist of fish” ~ i see them dancing to a Chubby Checker record now. {smile} thanks so much for your visit and kind comment! ♥
suspenseful! i couldn’t stop reading till the last line. :) sometimes it’s good to leave the work “unfinished” and let the reader form his/her own conclusion.
good stuff!
thank you for such a nice comment and for your visit! much appreciated!
