angels, the Devil and God { revisiting 2010 }

the angels held their breath

waiting to see what you would do

::   ::

the Devil made promises

certain that He knew what you most wanted

::   ::

God looked down and smiled

knowing all along what your decision would be

“Temptation”   Tom Waits

Written by Tom Waits
Vocal Arrangements by Kathleen Brennan
Horn Arrangements by Greg Cohen

lyrics ~

Rusted brandy in a diamond glass
Everything is made from dreams
Time is made from honey slow and sweet
Only the fools know what it means
Temptation, temptation,  temptation
I can’t resist

I just know that she is made of smoke
But I have lost my way
She knows that I am broke
But I must play
Temptation, temptation, temptation
I can’t resist

Temptation, temptation, temptation
I just can’t resist

Dutch pink and Italian blue
She’s there waiting for you
My will has disappeared
My confusion is oh so clear
Temptation, temptation, temptation
I can’t reisist

Temptation, temptation, temptation
I just can’t resist

Rusted brandy in a diamond glass
Everything is made from dreams
Time is made from honey slow and sweet
Only the fools know what it means
Temptation, temptation, temptation
Temptation, temptation, temptation
Temptation, temptation, temptation

  1. Goddess is already on to me, it’s true!

    I love that Tom Waits song. Like him, I can resist anything except temptation!

  2. i would hope it the wrong one sHe would let me know…but then again sHe lets us make them….smiles.

  3. A flashback to the days when we created angels, Satan and God in our own cockeyed image! But I’d like to think that God is a woman who is patient with us. And that that ol’ time “war in heaven” is just us trying to learn to integrate our own higher and lower natures so we can truly use all of our powers. As a poem, I enjoyed this one. On theology, I prefer to wrestle with your angels!

    • whenever my poetry has any type of religious connotation, i guarantee you that it has nothing to do with my own spiritual beliefs. {smile} wrestle away to your heart’s content, Charles! thank you for your visit and comment.

  4. So enjoyed your poem.. I sure hope God looks down at me and smiles. I try and boy, some days it is hard. Awesome job.

  5. so true…he always knows… and loves anyway..

  6. Straightforward in its partition of the circles of Beings and their role in what we perceive as destiny.

  7. Golly Gee Willikers, every trip here I feel as if I am at a gallery surrounded by your performance art. I am delighted, as in leave refreshed every time! This one shares beauty and simplicity with melodrama. You know, villain and hero around the innocent: “Pay the rent! I can’t pay the rent! I’ll pay the rent!”
    On the other hand, it ought to be a madrigal.
