there’s evil walkin’ this earth
there’s evil standin’ next to you and me
ain’t no safety in numbers
ain’t no safety in bein’ right
there’s evil all around us
there’s evil sneakin’ inside of me and evil sneakin’ inside of you
ain’t no body can smite the evil
ain’t no body can keep us safe
there’s evil in the darkness
there’s evil in the daylight
ain’t no prayers gonna make it disappear
ain’t no prayers gonna make us clean
there’s evil walkin’ this earth
there’s evil livin’ inside of me and evil livin’ inside of you

gonna go down to the water
gonna wash away the evil
gonna go down to the water
gonna go down there together
gotta go down to the water
gotta wash away the evil
gotta go down to the water
gotta wash our souls clean
gonna go down to the water
gonna wash our souls all clean

“Nothing But the Water” Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
lyrics ~
- Songwriters: Matthew P. Burr, Bryan Dondero, Grace Potter, Scott Tournet
I have seen what man can do
When the evil lives inside of you
Many are the weak and the strong are few
But with the water we’ll start anew
Won’t you take me down to the levy?
Take me down to the stream
Take me down to the water
We’re gonna wash our souls clean
Take me down to the river
Take me down to the lake
Yes, we’ll all go together
We’re gonna do it for the good Lord’s sake
I have fallen so many times
For the devil’s sweet, cunning rhymes
This old world has brought me pain
But there’s hope for me again
Well, won’t you take me down to the levy?
Take me down to the stream
Take me down to the water
We’re gonna wash our souls clean
Take me down to the river
Take me down to the lake
Yes, we’ll all go together
We’re gonna do it for the good Lord’s sake
I tried my hand at the Bible
Tried my hand at prayer
But now nothing but the water
Is gonna bring my soul to bare
But now nothing but the water
Is gonna bring my soul to bare

Yes, we have good and evil inside all of us, it’s our choice of which we allow to rule our lives isn’t it. This read almost like a song Dani. Really good :)
thank you, Bren! ♥ i was listening to the song over and over while i wrote it so i’m sure the music sunk in. {smile}
an excellent cadence in your words as well as hope
which there always is a bit more of…
so happy to see you! ♥ thank you for your visit and kind words.
This reads like a rhythm and blues song. I wish evil could just be washed away like that.
wouldn’t it be great if it were that easy? thank you for your visit, Laurie! ♥
Great song….One problem I have, though…I agree that there is too much evil around us, but I do not see any in myself…..Alright, maybe a tiny bit!
i just don’t look in a mirror! {smile} ♥
def has a nice bluesy soulful feel to it…almost made me feel like i was back in church dani…smiles…there is def evil all around us…so you betta watch out…smiles
i’m watching! i’m watching! {smile}
I really like this!
thank you, MZ! ♥ i appreciate you stopping by!
I like the refraining lines of going to the water ~ a meaningful share
And thanks for the video inspiration as well ~
sometimes a song gets under my skin, like this one did. thank you for stopping by, Heaven! ♥ it’s always good to see you.
I have to admit I was a bit disturbed at first by the hopelessness, until we found ourselves at the water.
I can see how this beautiful song inspired you. very nicely done.
thank you so much! ♥ i appreciate your visit and kind comment.
Girl! Where do you find this cool music anyways? What a voice. Gospel and blues, so nice! Your poem has the same feel, I can see the connection between the music and the poem. Lovin it all, SP!
i’ve found quite a few songs from background music on television shows. it’s usually really difficult to find them because i don’t have the title, only a couple of lines that i manage to catch ~ this one came up on youtube with “take me down to the levy.” love the song. love all a cappella singing. ♥ i think i’m becoming a very poor imitation of you, Coal! {smile} ♥
I have nominated you for the One Lovely Blog Award. If you like, visit the post at

thank you so much for the honor, Eclipse! ♥ it really does mean a lot to me but i do not participate in awards. *hugs*
Beautifully written! That is the basic concept that many argue over daily…baptism…gotta wash our souls clean…
especially when put together with the song, it does seem to be talking about baptism. if you take religion out of it, making it just “good versus evil” maybe one could literally wash it off. thank you for your kind comment! ♥
There is a lot of evil, Dani. Don’t know if the water would suffice, sadly. Hope it does :)
Leo
’tis but a poem, Leo. i will say that i do believe in Evil in this world. beyond that i will not give my personal views.
very very cool :)
thank you! ♥ i appreciate your visit and kind comment!
