.◊. singin’ the blues

comin’ down

down
down
down

fallin’ through a hole in the sky
sky blue sky

down into the depths of  despair
down

in the deep blue sea
blue

as blue can be
can’t you see?

sapphire eyes spark
ling with tears unshed

in the lush blue velvet
of  the night

unseen by any
save for the blue moon

who wept tears
turned blue at the

sound of  her sorrow

for

when she’s feelin’ down
feelin’ blue
only thing to do

is sing the blues

the blues
got hold of  her

down into her very soul

down
down
down

.◊..◊..◊.
blues burning
burning bright
to find
their way out

of  the songbird’s
throat
she’s singin’ the blues
singin’ the blues, baby

to the moon
the blue, blue moon

“Kozmic Blues”   Janis Joplin

with a voice so strong
you had to look into her eyes to see
the little girl blue beneath

sorrow and pain hidden deep

…so deep…
only set free
in her songs

“The song ~ I don’t think. Just close my eyes and feel ~ I feel good. It’s really like a fever. It is about a hundred orgasms with someone you love. He lives for that hour on stage. It is full of feelings .. It is a fever, honey …”   Janis Joplin

  1. very lyrical dani…love the drops in down and the imagery of it forcing itself from the songbird…def bluesy…

    • thanks, brian! i guess the 8 plus hours of listening to Janis’ music did have an effect? {smile} i love the blues and i love Janis Joplin {this is the third time i’ve posted poetry about her/inspired by her.}

  2. Yes indeed…Janis Joplin was a true songbird of the blues…gifted and inspired…this is a wonderfully crafted tribute to her.

    • thank you so much! i love her singing~ this is the second post i’ve done with her music. it does make me sad, though, that she died at such a young age. i appreciate your visit and kind comment. ♥

  3. One of my fav!
great tribute Dani, a beutifully written, as always :)

  4. I can’t tell you how much I love this! What talent you have – and such passion.
    Love the “sapphire eyes spark
ling with tears unshed” – thank you for sharing your beautiful work with us, Kristin xo

    • wow! thank you, Kristin! ♥ i love Janis Joplin’s music and it was there that the inspiration came from. i appreciate you hosting The Summer of Color. ♥

  5. A beautiful, moving, emotive poem.

  6. your poem itself read like a song, Dani… LOVELY!!
Yes, there are days like this.. and then there are days..
But I guess we must sing to these days too, for without them, we would not know what the happier ones would have felt like.. no?

    So.. cheers to blues!!
And oh YES! Cheers to the wonderful Janis Joplin…

    • *hugs* thank you, Kavita! ♥ as you say, how could we appreciate the happy times without the sad? i love Janis’ music. she had a voice perfect for the blues.

  7. Super Tribute. I just recent wrote about her and Jimmy. An interesting study. A unique and creative poem.

    • thank you, Henry, and it’s nice to meet you! i’ve seen you’re name at One Stop Poetry and wanted to visit your site, but computer problems are limiting my online time right now. i did go by briefly and i really like your layout. i’d like to simplify my right sidebar, but there are just too many sites i love to pick and choose. {and i love badges}{giggle} in fact, i need to update the sidebar and my blogrolls to add more. by the way, i’m now following you on twitter {@poetpassionbakr} though i’m not on much right now because of my laptop problems. thank you for visiting and for your kind comment.

  8. So sorry I’m just now getting to your poem. I thought I had read it, until I double checked today and indeed, no I had not. What a joy. This did capture both the blues and that elusive thing Joplin had of being both innocent and “bad”. Bad wasn’t quite as fierce as it is now and when she wasn’t trying to be something else, the hicky little Texas town girl came out in the sweetest and most innocent ways. It’s a shame she found drugs but maybe it eased her pain which was undoubtedly intense. Well done here on your blues. Thank you so much for writing and linking and for your kind comments on all my poems.

    • no apology necessary, Gay! i don’t know how you find time to visit all of the sites that you do. i never get to visit everyone i want to. i am very appreciative when any of you amazing poets from One Stop Poetry visit. i love Janis Joplin’s music, but it breaks my heart when i see some of the photographs of her and not only see, but feel the pain in her eyes. i’m grateful for your kind comment and i still want to try writing something bluesy using the form which you provided at OSP. i just love your form series! thank you, Gay! ♥

comments are greatly appreciated ♥ your comment will be visible after blog owner approval. thank you! ♥
